I previously used a setup like Benoît's; GoSa is a great web-based interface for an OpenLDAP Domain Controller, however when I tried to explain to the (technically-inclined) school staff that you use "this URL to add and edit computer users, this ...

After working part-time on this for over a year, I've started to put together viable solutions for providing low-cost, low-energy computer networks for schools. The technology, of course, was always there. What the schools need is enough support t...

The thin client solutions I provide incorporate Zimbra as the Domain Controller and Collaboration Portal; email, shared calendars, tasks as well as online document creation. Since Zimbra uses OpenLDAP, I've configures Samba to authenticate to it s...

Alex, Look forward to seeing the process but I'd have to take issue with "Allow all users to use sudo without the root password." That's the whole reason why school computers are trashed within days of deployment; allowing local administrator acce...

The biggest barrier I've seen and the one that killed a successful Open Source project in my district is status-quo. Teachers, administrators and the IT techs know Windows, use Windows at home and see Windows everywhere. If Windows has an 80% mark...

As indigo mentioned, LDAP network authentication can be used; it's a enterprise-class system and is actually the basis of Microsoft's Active Directory. If a district already has an Active Directly system in place, you could use a program such as L...

Perhaps you can get this off the ground again if you 'bring the support'... If your IT director and his staff are this phobic about anything other than Windows they are not keeping their jobs based on technical merit. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Cali...

Open Source in Schools - Community Support Solutions

After working part-time on this for over a year, I've started to put together viable solutions for providing low-cost, low-energy computer networks for schools. The technology, of course, was always there. What the schools need is enough support to relieve the burden placed on the instructors. So what I've come up with is a commercially-supported "Open Source Volunteer Certification" which uses (pays) local LUG members to teach classes on Linux and Open Source Software use to Teachers, Parents a… Continue

Death of an Open Source Project

After over two year of providing reliable, accessible and safe technology to over 110 students and 8 faculty members, the Linux Thin Client Network at Liberty High School in Benicia was shut down at the end of last semester. Not that the technology failed to deliver; total cost of the project over the two years including new servers (4), network switches (4), PXE NICs (20), recycled workstations used as thin client terminals (55) and consulting time (setup, installation and 2-years maintenance)… Continue

Is The Community Enough?

Linux and Open Source software thrives because of the communities surrounding them. Without the collaboration and cooperation of thousands of people world-wide, the Internet as we know it wouldn't exist.

So what happens when we rely on the Community to provide support for Open Source projects in our schools? I've seen (and participated in) many volunteer build-fests, recycling projects and classroom installs that provided a great start to projects. I've also seen many of them fail after just a… Continue
